Not 50 miles southeast of Cancun (12 miles from Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula), in the shallows of the Caribbean Sea, lies an island that has captivated scuba divers since the beginning of the sport.

Jacques Cousteau dove the island of Cozumel the early 1960s and declared it a singular dive site--one of the best in the world. Since then, Mexico has declared the Palancar Reef, on the southwestern end of the Island, a national park and has restricted development of the area. When you consider what the island (and the Palancar) offer little wonder why: with its calm, turquoise shallows, copious marine life, and 100'+ visibility, you can get a great view from the glass-bottomed boats that tote tourists back and forth all day long.

The view from the top is great. The view underwater, however, is spectacular.

Cozumel's story doesn't start with Cousteau, though. Thousands of years before Cousteau made Cozumel famous, the island was a site sacred to the Mayan civilization. It is believed that, at its high-point, 40,000 Mayans lived here. The Maya built several temples and other structures on the island, some of which are still standing today.
